Coconut coir is the pith part of the coconut husk (shell) that emerges from the husking process. Long fibers are extracted for environmentally safe growing products, ropes, mattresses, and cushions, and coconut pith is the binding material that remains. A special grade of coconut coir is washed, screened, graded, and processed in various coconut coir products for horticultural & agricultural uses. It is a homogenous material composed of millions of capillary micro-sponges, which absorb and hold up 8+ times its own weight in water. Carbon-rich coir balances nitrogen-rich kitchen scraps in compost and this size works better than large blocks. This sale is for one brick of compacted coconut coir, also known as cocopeat. Each convenient size brick weighs approximately 230g and produces approximately 1.2 gallon. Brick sizes may vary, but each is the minimum weight (sold by weight, not volume). Bricks are wrapped individually in paper or clear wrapping. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY 100% NATURAL SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO PEAT MOSS–Coir doesn't produce the same environmental damage caused by peat mining & hydrates easier & lasts longer in soil. Why use coir as a growing medium? Coir is superior to peat moss in both chemical nutrient value and in physical properties. Commercial growers in Europe and the Middle East have established positive agronomic benefits of Coir use. Now, commercial growers in North America have begun to see increases in gains from using Coir. In addition, unlike peat moss, the process of obtaining Coir does not destroy natural ecosystems, thereby making Coir a natural, renewable resource, and an environmentally friendly alternative to peat moss. Coconut Coir growing mediums are dehydrated and compressed into a compact form for easy handling. With the addition of water, Coir expands to an easy to work with growing medium. The addition of water increases the volume 3 to 9 times, depending on the packaging of products. This process results in a 100% organic, biodegradable growing medium, making it a natural and safe growth medium of choice for growers. How Do I Expand My Coir? Coir only needs water to expand. Simply add the specified amount of water to your Coir and let it stand to begin the expansion process. Breaking apart the material with a shovel or stick will help to speed up the process. If too much water is added, simply drain the excess water after the Coir is expanded. For faster expansion use warm water. To expand one block of 1 Kg we add 2 gallons of water in a container. This 1kg block will make enough soil after expanded to fill any of this: 135 2" square pots 50 4" azalea pots 40 4" standard pots 25 5" azalea pots 15 6" azalea pots 11 6" standard pots Each brick is 9 x 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch, 1 kg (2.2 lbs), when expanded will fill it in total 6-7 boxes of same size of the brick.
